Youth Programs
GSAHEC inspires youth to choose a career in the health professions with our health career camps, mentoring programs, college preparatory courses and more. We focus on recruiting more minority and disadvantaged youth into health careers because research and experience indicate they will be more likely to care for the medically underserved. As our population becomes more diverse, it is important that our health care workforce reflects that diversity.
Gulfcoast South AHEC's mission is to establish community-academic partnerships for the health of the underserved. An essential component of our program involves the recruitment of students from underserved, rural, and inner-city communities and underrepresented populations into primary care health fields, including medicine, nursing, and other health professions.
GSAHEC has chosen to address current recruitment needs by:
- Conducting health careers presentations
- Establishing an ongoing program called Recruitment & Educational Assistance for Careers in Health or REACH
- Forming academic partnerships with area HOSA chapters
- Sponsoring REACH summer internships
- Funding community organizations to host Health Careers Summer Camps and
- Partnering with USF to send eligible students to ACCESS Day and the Health Professions Summer Academy.
