Trained medical interpreters reduce language and cultural barriers and help promote individual and family engagement by enhancing the encounter between providers and patients. The results are improved communication; increased patient/provider satisfaction; increased utilization of preventative services, follow-up care and adherence to treatment; and better health outcomes for patients with limited/non English speaking skills.
Gulfcoast South AHEC’s ACCESS Program offers medical interpreting training, national certification preparation, language mediator training, basic occupational Spanish for the health care and public safety settings, cultural competency training and more.
The availability of culturally and linguistically competent health services is increasingly being recognized as a prerequisite to quality and effective health care. With the growing number of Florida residents who speak a language other than English (more than 27% of the population), there is an increasing demand for qualified interpreters in the health care and public safety settings.
Important Information about our 40 hour Medical Interpreting class:

- Participants who miss more than 10% (4 hours) of the class will not receive a certificate until the missed hours have been fulfilled. A written request for an excused absence should be submitted.
